Synthetic backings like latex, polypropylene (i.e., Action Bac®) or PVC are made from chemicals and generally use harsh adhesives and glues during the manufacturing process. Rugs with a natural backing like jute, cotton, or wool have lower emissions and create a healthier home environment.

Synthetic latex is petroleum-based and often contains VOCs and chemical additives. Natural latex is derived from rubber tree sap and is generally more eco-friendly—but it can still trigger latex allergies and is not biodegradable in all forms. People may choose to avoid both to reduce chemical exposure, allergy risks, and to prioritize fully natural, glue-free rug backings.

Many of our natural fibers rugs are backed with natural latex. Find natural latex backed rugs here.

Jute fibers are a breathable, biodegradable backing option that offers structural support without synthetic materials. It’s ideal for those looking for low-VOC or glue-free options in their home.

EarthSISAL™ rugs feature a unique fleece backing made from kenaf, hemp, and recycled sisal from coffee sacks. The fleece backing is attached to the sisal via a mechanical needle-punch process instead of traditional adhesives and glues. Furthermore, the fleece backing provides thermal and sound insulation as well as a layer of cushioning, making EarthSISAL™ a standout in our EarthGentle™ lineup.
