Spotlight on Design: An interview with Kristy Unger, Principal at Upperworth
Design Principles Upperworth executed amazingly:
Herringbone on Herringbone. Herringbone carpet laid over herringbone parquet floors
Carpet insets (do we have a photo?)
Respect the tradition. St. Andrews: property which overlooks the Royal & Ancient clubhouse and first tee on the Old Course. Scores/Seaton The Victorian townhouse's renaming is meant to be a tribute to its past, which dates back to 1864.
The pitch:
So looking through the correspondence it looks like your initial questions were about performance (durability and staining). Were you already sold on the aesthetic based on samples or past usage?
The carpet is made of nylon and has usage class 33, which is the highest rating in textile carpet. SynSisal is specifically designed to go in heavy traffic spaces.
SynSisal is made with Nylon yarns, which is generally used for heavy traffic spaces, because of its durability and easy care and maintenance.
Nylon yarn is one of the most popular yarns in the hospitality industry today. It has a solid reputation for being durable, its meet fire classification standards and is easy to clean and to maintain.
For SynSisal we even use Solution Dyed Nylon, which is one of the most stain resistant types of nylon. This yarn locks the colour in by adding it during the production of the fiber (rather than dyeing the 'greige' fiber after production). When the color is actually part of the fiber, it is permanent and fade-resistant, and spills are unable to attach themselves to the fiber’s cells to create stains.
7 why the border?
Why synsisal. performance or aesthetics. which one is more important?
Synsisal looks the most real is the ideal pullquote.
Design inspiration to product selection. Where do you find your inspiration.
moodboard process. Herringbone on herringbone. St. Andrews is a historic property does the client have a very specific look that they're looking for. Are there models to consult?
Was it a case where it turned out well for one project and the other project wanted pretty much the exact same look?

What sold you on synsisal when you were evaluating different options? Does synsisal have the most natural look? Clearly durability and stain proof was a concern at the start. Flooring is just one piece of the design. Start with a blank slate. Did you want rugs or wall-to-wall. A layered effect on the herringbone parquet floors? Rugs play with the other elements. Inset pieces. Project led to next one. Why mink?

Part of our exclusive SynSisal® collection, Astoria creates a beautiful balance between functionality and refinement in any space with its strong yet soft fibers and stylish herringbone pattern. An excellent choice for high traffic living areas, stairs, boutique businesses or commercial spaces, Astoria is made to last with its durable fibers, high lightfastness, and UV resistance. Plus, the ECONYL® yarns have inherent stain-resistance. Available in a neutral color palette, from cedar to mesquite, Astoria awaits your final touches.
SynSisal® is Curran & sisalcarpet.com’s proprietary and unique hard-wearing synthetic sisal alternative. It is unlike any other product on the marketplace for how it looks and performs in contract and hospitality settings. While there are other products out there that look like sisal, many are unbacked polypropylene which may be easy to clean but are not durable enough to withstand heavy foot traffic.
Our SynSisal® weaves are a sustainable choice in flooring. Made from 100% recycled materials (from fishing nets to recycled nylon carpeting to repurposed materials), these contract-grade weaves have low VOC contribution and are 100% regenerable.

From global resort chains to boutique hotels and Napa Valley wineries, we've designed custom flooring solutions for concepts large and small.
SynSisal® is a contract-grade carpet that is designed to stand up to heavy foot traffic, moisture, and spills, even red wine and burger grease. We recommend James cleaning products for especially tough stains.
